In leadership, we often review players on the team and their individual qualities, character, and capabilities. We look at the character of each person and ask ourselves: Are they hungry? Do they really want it bad enough? Will they do the things that must be done to get to where they and/or we want or need to go? Will this player sit back and wait, or will they do those small things that eventually lead to the big chance or a big win for them, the team, or the company?
What I’ve Learned:
If you want to do anything worthwhile in life – you have to be HUNGRY. You must practice every day to develop yourself. This is a must do. You must have personal growth before you can attain professional achievement, and you must have passion with what you are doing. This advice applies whether you are working to be a better parent or spouse, individual contributor, or a senior executive. We all must grow.
What I have Observed:
Those who have risen to the top always seize the moment of chance they are given, and they never squander it! One of the most inspirational videos I have seen is Mr. Les Brown who touches on what it means to be hungry. Take a look and then read on.
Did you notice how Les received his big break? He would have never been in the studio on the day the phone call was made to “help,” had he given up when he received his first “No.” Each of us, whether in our personal lives or professional lives, will do well to ask ourselves, “Do we quit when we encounter the first couple of No’s?” Are you HUNGRY enough to seize the moment of opportunity you are given when you are given it? Even if you aren’t given that moment, are you hungry enough to never quit in order to succeed?
Les Brown put together this 7-part program. My favorite is Week #2! How are you measuring up against these 7 Power Strategies? Look for another Pulse Article in the near future that outlines a few of my craziest and daring career moves!!
