Building a high-performing enterprise sales team is no small feat. It requires a strategic approach, the right people, and effective processes. As someone who’s led global sales organizations and scaled teams from dozens to hundreds, I’ve learned a thing or two about what it takes to drive revenue growth in the enterprise space.
The Foundation: People, Playbooks, and Process
When it comes to scaling an enterprise sales organization, three key elements form the foundation: people, playbooks, and process. Let’s break these down:
1. Hiring the Right People
Finding top talent is crucial, but it’s not just about impressive resumes. You must look for individuals who embody what Adam Block called “RAD” – Resilience, Accountability, and Discipline.
These three traits are essential for success in the challenging world of enterprise sales.
“R” for Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks with renewed vigor.
“A” for Accountability: Owning outcomes, both good and bad.
“D” for Discipline: Consistently doing the right things, even when they’re difficult.
During our Vengreso sales hiring interview process we designed it to tease out these qualities. We put candidates in unexpected situations to see how they react, and we involve multiple team members to ensure a good fit.
2. Developing Effective Playbooks
A solid playbook is the roadmap for your sales team’s success. The playbooks that Adam described at Motive should focus on three key areas:
- Product knowledge: Understanding what the company does, how they do it, and the unique value proposition.
- Clear expectations: Outlining precisely what’s expected of each role, from metrics to behaviors.
- Value architecture: A unified approach to discovering a client needs and articulating the solution’s value.
3. Streamlining Processes
Efficient processes are the engine that drives your sales machine. This includes everything from how you manage your pipeline to how you engage with prospects. At Motive, we’ve invested heavily in our SDR organization, which not only improves market contact but also serves as a talent pipeline for future AEs.
Boosting Seller Efficiency and Pipeline Growth
With the foundation in place, the next challenge is maximizing efficiency and driving pipeline growth. Here are some strategies that have worked well for other companies like Motive and us here at Vengreso:
1. Embrace the “No Rules” Approach to Prospecting
When it comes to making initial contact with prospects, I encourage my team to use every tool at their disposal. We call it omni-channel prospecting. As I often say, it’s “by hook or by crook.” This means leveraging:
- Phone calls
- Emails
- LinkedIn outreach
- Direct mail
- Sales Referrals
- Partner networks
- Trade shows
The key is to be persistent and creative in your approach to outbound prospecting. Remember, 70% of the work in sales is getting that first conversation. Once you’re in, the rest of the process becomes much easier.
- Leverage AI and Technology
While AI won’t replace the human touch in sales, it can significantly enhance efficiency. We’re using AI in the sales process for:
- Account research
- Territory planning
- Business value assessments
- Content creation (like turning presentations into podcasts)
- LinkedIn auto comment generation
- AI social post generation
- AI writing
- AI grammar checking
- AI sales roleplay and coaching
Tools like Gemini and ChatGPT are helping our team access information faster and more effectively. The key is to have some of the best ChatGPT prompts made available for sales to use embedded into text expander tools like FlyMSG. Doing so will allow sellers to quickly deploy out prompts on these platforms.
However, it’s crucial to remember that AI should augment, not replace, human interaction. We call it human-assisted AI.
3. Focus on Continuous Learning and Development
Sales is an ever-evolving field, and staying ahead requires constant learning. Many companies have implemented a “farm system” approach, where SDRs can progress to mid-market AEs and then to enterprise AEs. This not only provides a clear career path but also ensures sales team members are constantly developing new skills. Sales training and sales coaching are the key to success
The Human Element: Building Genuine Connections
Despite all the technology and processes, at its core, enterprise sales is about building relationships. As I often remind my team, “A human connection will always be more powerful than an AI interaction.”
Encourage your team to:
- Personalize their outreach
- Share authentic stories and insights
- Be consistent in their follow-ups
- Speak the language of their prospects
Key Moments of a Podcast all About Building Resilient Sales Organizations
Below is a sales video podcast presentation with me and Adam Block the CRO of Motive. Adam is a friend of mine and during this podcast we all talk about building resilient sales organizations. Given the size of his sales organization, I believe he is uniquely qualified to teach us a thing or two.

Prior to Motive, he served as Vice President over the Public Sector, Healthcare, Manufacturing, High Tech, and Life Sciences teams at Medallia, the leading enterprise experience platform. Conclusion: The Path to Sustainable Growth
Building a high-performing enterprise sales organization is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires a delicate balance of strategy, technology, and human touch. By focusing on hiring the right people, developing effective playbooks, streamlining processes, and embracing both technology and human connection, you can create a sales machine that drives sustainable growth.
Remember, as challenging as it can be to get that first conversation, it’s the persistence and creativity you bring to the process that will set you apart. So, in the words of one of my favorite movies, Shawshank Redemption, “Get busy living, or get busy dying.” In sales, that means get busy connecting, or get busy falling behind.
