How Often Should You Use LinkedIn

One of the most common questions I get from sales professionals and other busy professionals is – how often should I log into LinkedIn?

I have a simple answer…

It depends…

It depends on your goals.

If you’re in B2B sales, and you’re just getting started on LinkedIn, I recommend you log in every day. In fact, I recommend you never log out of LinkedIn. On your desktop, just leave a tab open with LinkedIn and visit it periodically throughout the day as your schedule permits. Peruse your timeline. Look for people to invite to connect. I recommend you do this every day to build your network.

To measure your effectiveness, measure the growth of your network as a KPI (key performance indicator). But, the true measure of effectiveness is sales conversations started. Ultimately, your goal is to improve your sales results using LinkedIn. And, as such you should always strive to create relationships that result in sales conversations.

If you’re an experienced user of LinkedIn and you have a robust network and your career is on the fast track, you may not need to use LinkedIn every day. In this case, I encourage you to be a “pay it forward” person and look to help others in your network. Think about who in your network is a good introduction to people that you know.

With a robust network, you have a lot of power at your fingertips to help others. And, all it takes is a couple of minutes in orchestrating an introduction.

Another way someone with a robust network can be of service is to write recommendations for people you know. Don’t wait to be asked. Writing a sincere recommendation for someone can be a big boost to their career and their business.

Remember that LinkedIn is like Google, in that people use the search feature looking for people, products, jobs and more. A seasoned user of LinkedIn with a vast network is in a good position to be found and helpful to others in your network.

Whether you’re just getting started on LinkedIn or a seasoned pro, use LinkedIn as often as you need to build and maintain your network and help others in your network.
