LinkedIn Background Image Guidelines 2018

Update: See the 2019 LinkedIn Background Image Guidelines for Personal and Company Profiles here

Whether you have considered doing a LinkedIn makeover or not, if you haven’t added a background image to your profile yet, you are missing out on a HUGE branding opportunity.

Adding or Changing Your LinkedIn Background Image

To add or change your LinkedIn background image, click on the pen on the right of your profile, and then when the intro section pops up, click on the pen again.  That will take you to the page where you can upload your new image.

If the elements of your new background image are not properly placed, they won’t be seen.

Fortunately, the overall LinkedIn background image size is still 1584 x 398.  The biggest change is that your photo is a little bit bigger and aligned (approximately) 500 pixels more to the left.  If your existing background image has important information on the left, you will want to scoot it over so that your picture doesn’t cover it!

If you are uploading an image for the first time, make sure that all important information is on the right side within the 396 x 1215 pixels “safe” space.

Additional Tips:

  1. If you have the old profile, you might still think about changing your background image. Why? Because if someone else has the new user interface, they will see your profile in the new interface dimensions, even if you don’t have it yet. (That’s actually how I was able to get the screenshot above.)
  2. Add branding elements in the “safe” zones: logos, taglines, fonts, colors, books, images that support your personal brand.

  • Laura

Thanks for sharing this! Will the mobile profile pictures move to the left-hand side as well? It appears mobile is still centered.

  • Hi Laura – so I have only seen it show up correctly on one person’s cell phone (and it was an Android.) I am hoping this means they are working on ALL cell phone’s mobile interfaces!

  • Hi, where is the mobile safe area? I put the logo on the middle but my client says it is not mobile safe. Thanks!

  • Hi – if your client’s network is very mobile heavy in usage then you can always put your log on the top right side where it will be seen on browser and mobile.

Is there a way to have my background banner as a rolling short video?

  • I’ve only see the logo as a gif – but not the banner..

  • Hi Viveka,

Wondering if there is any good research about the effectiveness of light LinkedIn banners versus dark ones. We’re having our own in house debate about this with some in the “people prefer lighter” camp and others in the “darker catches more attention and interest” camp. I noticed you LinkedIn banner is darker. Thanks for any insights about the light vs. dark debate.

    Don

  • Hey Don – funny you should bring that up! I just had the same conversation with a prospect who had a white banner – I really liked it and pinged my graphics guy to make some light Vengreso banners! So here’s what I would say – Dark Banners stand out more – but white banners make the background appear integrated into LinkedIn and I think you could do some really cool stuff with that! In the end – it’s a matter of personal choice- but fortunately, NOTHING is one and done – you can change it up as often as you like! Also – here’s the new templates – since they have changed… AGAIN: https://vengreso.com/blog/update-linkedin-banner

  • And for Charms and Designs – the new template serves both Mobile and Desktop – YAY! https://vengreso.com/blog/update-linkedin-banner
